A young man witnesses a large, male sasquatch while still hunting for deer in rural Wisconsin in 1980.

Time of Encounter:
This encounter was on opening day of Wisconsin gun deer season back in Nov.1980. This was a day that for many reasons was going to be very strange. For one, this was the first time I went hunting deer by myself without my grandfather who was my best friend and showed me how to hunt, fish, shoot a gun, bait hook, clean a fish, gut a deer, respect nature and mother earth. At the ripe old age of 5 year’s old he taught me how to sit still and be quiet. That’s quite a feat for a man in his mid-60’s to do that to 5 year old boy. But now when I was 18 years of age, he passed away just 12 days before deer season was to open. So now knowing my best friend wasn’t going to be there and he always led the way when we hunted together. We never used deer stands we still hunted, walking ever so quiet. You couldn’t hear a twig break when grandpa walked along or thru the wood’s or marsh. And when I would snap a twig he’d have a look in his eye don’t do that again your gonna let the deer hear us coming. We used the cover of the land to disguise ourselves. And trust me it took all day to walk 1 mile one way an 1 mile back the way we came. So now with him not being there it was time to face a new era of hunting.
I started the day like we did any other times. Getting to the hunting land around 6 A.M, I walked the same tree line and sat on the same stump that grandpa did. It felt really strange sitting on his stump. As the day went on, I had the memories of grandpa and a few tears in my eyes thinking about him throughout the day. It was now getting a little later in the afternoon haven’t shot a deer as of yet. The afternoon winds were picking up and the chill in the air was getting colder and there was some rain or snow moving in. I was on my way back from hunting the tree line that led to a boggy marsh. From this marsh there was an old wire type fence row with large oak trees, some hickory, a few small brush piles, and some tall grasses about chest high. It was about 25 to 30 feet in width and was about 200 to 250 yards long, going from the marsh to a heavy wooded area. I was walking west to east up the hill that separated the marsh and woods. With wind to my back and the rains came, I now was getting cold and hungry as I walked up the fence line. Once I got to top of hill using the large oaks and hickories to hide behind and stand watch between two fields. I found myself standing next to the large oak that grandpa stood next to. This oak is huge you couldn’t put your arms around it even if two people where to try to touch hands. I was looking along the open cut corn field towards the northeast with my shoulder leaning to the tree for several minutes. I then went to lean on the other side of the tree to watch over a field that went down towards the marsh.
This is where my life changed. As I turned to look across the field, I saw a huge black bi-pedal hairy figure walking along an out cropping of young 10 to 20 foot tall white oak trees and a long a grassy field. I stood there for a second before I stepped back next to the tree. There was plenty of daylight out to see it quite clearly. It took one step towards me and the then looked up at me. I saw it before it saw me. I was standing there frozen in total amazement. It looked at me and then turned to its left. It never made any type of motion that it was going to attack me or harm me. It took off running down the grassy field to the marsh. The only sound I remember was the sound of its feet hitting the ground, a heavy dull sounding thud, thud, thud, thud. It never looked back at me. It ran across this field fast, and I mean fast. From the edge of the trees to the marsh was around 150 yards and it did that in record time. I would figure 10 seconds or less. When it reached the bottom of the hill there is a small creek that divides the field and marsh. In one motion it looked as if it leaped over it in one stride. The creek is easily 10 foot if not more across. Once it made its way into the marsh, I saw it for just a glimpse and it was gone.
I believe I saw sasquatch. The thing that got me the most was at first what the hell is it and what do I do now. Knowing I have to get back to my car which was less than a half mile from where this happened. I was shocked to see this. I stood next to the tree for god knows how long for I really don’t remember walking away from the tree until I came across the impressions in the grass where it ran across. I looked across the field heading east where my car was an took off running like a bat out of hell. Got to my car, threw my gun in, started my car, and almost got it stuck trying to get the hell out of there. My heart was just a racing, my body just tingling, and hair standing on edge. I was freaking out. Once I got home which was about 10 minutes away, I ran in the house, took my clothes off, threw them on the floor, smoked it seemed a half pack a cig’s, and fell asleep. I don’t remember much until the next day when I woke up and saw all my hunting stuff thrown all over the living room, lights still on from the night before, and the TV was on. I started thinking about what the hell did I see. It looked like one of those bigfoots that you see from northwestern part of America. Not in Marquette county Wisconsin. (Grandpa never told me about them being around!)
Ok now how big was it? I feel it was 8 1/2 to 9 foot tall and was as wide as a piece of plywood. Long ass arms, could see muscle tone too through his movement from head to toe it seemed like. Cone shaped head, heavy brow line above eyes, there was really no hair around its cheek an chin area. Very dark if not black colored eyes. Ran like a cross country skier. Face was a darkish gray reddish color. Again it made no sound like a growl or scream. It looked at me and ran off. It didn’t jump like I scared it. Another thing about this sighting is back then who did you contact to talk about this? For the most part I have kept this to myself for almost 40 years until the Finding Bigfoot show came on. This is where I met Andy and Chris to tell my story. And now to make peace with myself and find out more about this awesome creature. For I know they are real, you don’t have to convince me of that. I’ve known a long time ago that they are real. This feel’s real, real good to be able to share this with you. A load it feels has come off the back sort a speak. So there you have it. Thanks for reading my encounter.
I have interviewed the witness twice now about his encounter. It obviously had a great impact on him. One point he left out of his narrative is that the creature was 150 feet away from him when he first saw it. Other than that, his narrative is very thorough, and I have nothing else to add.
