We would like to announce the official launch of the new SRA Forums, accessible from the Community tab. As we have blogged about in the past, our old forum system failed to meet our needs. Over the course of the past week, we have been installing and preparing a new forum site based on the Invision Power Board forums. These new forums are far more reliable than our old system. We have completed the transfer of all existing users and content to the new forums, and all links have been set up.
The new forum is much more intuitive for our users as it follows a convention similar to most other forum communities. We will also be gaining a great number of features. These include but are not limited to, a more cohesive registration process, better payment solutions, better organization, user managed photo galleries, a chat system, an online store, better forum search features, better/easier profile management, and much more! All of this will be packaged with a more stable user experience for you.
Originally, we thought that having this new forum would require you to have to log in to both the main SRA site and the forum separately, but as development continued, we were able to move all functionality that requires a login to the forum, so only the site administrators will need accounts here on the main site. Do to this, we needed to disable the commenting features on the blog posts of the main site, but at the bottom of each post is a link to a forum specially created for commenting on that post (you can see an example of this at the bottom of this post). These forums, though one step removed from the post, give you much more control over your comments, including the ability to add photos and links. This also allowed us to have a simple and straight forward registration process, that works consistently for all users.
Now that we have this up and running, we will resume our usual posting schedule and should have new content up on the site in a few days.
We look forward to conversing with you in the new forums.
Thank you for your patience and support,
SRA Andy, Jim, and Kris
