The Ocheesee Pond wild man is known about from local legend in Jackson County, Florida, and from a New York Times article that appeared in that day.  Captured in 1884 by a group of men, many of them former confederate soldiers, who hunted down the strange creature that had been raiding gardens and stealing chickens.  It was thought to be a wild hairy person, shuttled around to various authorities until he was placed in a mental institution where he died two years later.
